The Office of the Physical Education at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet is as old as the university itself. The office work is conducted by the Director under whose guidance different Tournaments such as, Inter-university, Inter-faculty, Inter-department, open and National ones are organized by the department. Annual Athletics Meet is held every year with the participation of students, teachers, officers and staffs. The Physical Education Department is further dealing with co-curriculum activities to ensure a comprehensive development of the students. The department provides stipend to ten best student-players and two students are awarded “University-Blue” for excellence and success in international, national or inter-university tournaments every year. The university gymnasium is being maintained by the department for the student’s workout. The experienced officers of the department, who did their degrees from home and abroad, are organizing tournaments for the students and are doing research on games and sports. Mr. Md. Mozahid Hossain, the former Director of the department, did a laudable job as team leader in “The World University Games 2005” held in Istanbul, Turkey. Mr. Chowdhury Soud-Bin Ambia, The present Office In charge was once a renowned National Athlete. The female officers of the department Mrs. Meher Ara Begum (Deputy Director) and Namita Day (Physical Instructor) are working for Sylhet and University Female Students Sports Development as well with flying colors. The former BKSP cadet Mr. Md. Shahidul Islam (Assistant Director) completed his M.P.Ed degree obtaining gold medal from the renowned Banaras Hindu University, India under Indian government’s ICCR scholarship and also did his Diploma in Sports Management Degree from Leipzig University, Germany on a scholarship scheme from German Federal Foreign Office. He also obtained ‘C’ licence on coaching from Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Malaysia and Club Manager Licence from German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), Germany. Mr. Md. Rashidul Hasan, Assistant Director of the department, obtained Diploma in Handball Coaching Degree from Patiala, India under Indian government’s ICCR Scholarship Scheme and recently has completed a Diploma in Handball Degree from Leipzig University, Germany on scholarship from German Federal Foreign Office. Mr. Md. Abdur Rakib, another Physical Instructor of the department, was a National Athlete.
